Oesophageal Surgery
An
ENT
or
Head & Neck
Surgeon will undertake Oesophageal surgery that may be required to treat various conditions, such as oesophageal cancer and benign (non-cancerous) tumours or lumps, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (
GERD
), motility (food swallowing movement) disorders such as achalasia, oesophageal strictures (narrowing or closure of the
oesophagus
), and oesophageal diverticula (weak areas of the oesophagus that bulge or pouch outwards). Many procedures are carried out with the aid of a laparoscope, a flexible lighted tube with a camera attached, which is inserted through a small incision in the abdominal wall. Other small incisions allow instruments to be inserted.
