Geriatric Medicine

A Geriatrician is a Geriatric medicine (geriatrics) specialist. Geriatric Medicine is concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease in older people and the problems specific to ageing. One of the medical challenges for older adults is that more than half of adults age 65 or older have 3 or more medical problems, such as heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease, high blood pressure, incontinence, impaired vision, hearing and mobility. Prescribing medications for a patient with multiple health problems is more complex. There is no set age at which patients may be under the care of geriatric physician, rather, this decision is determined by the individual patient’s needs.
