about Prof Richard De Steiger
Professor de Steiger is an orthopaedic surgeon with a special interest in hip and knee joint replacement and the management of adult hip disorders. He is the Epworth, Victor Smorgon Chair of Surgery, The University of Melbourne and the Deputy Director of the Australian Orthopaedic Association, National Joint Replacement Registry (AOANJRR) since 2007.
Professor de Steiger obtained his FRACS in orthopaedic surgery in Melbourne in 1991 and studied for several years at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford, United Kingdom and held a fellowship at the Inselspital Hospital, Bern, Switzerland. He was awarded his PhD from the School of Population Health at the University of Adelaide and he also holds a Diploma of Bioengineering from Strathclyde University, UK. He was awarded the prestigious ABC Orthopaedic fellowship in 1998 allowing him to travel to 18 major orthopaedic centres in the USA and Canada to further his orthopaedic experience. Professor de Steigers research interests include improving outcomes of joint replacement surgery, computer navigation, biomechanical studies of gait and knee joint prostheses and mechanisms involved in the cause of knee osteoarthritis. He is a Chief Investigator on several large orthopaedic clinical trials and has received over 13 million dollars in Government and other research grants.
Professor de Steiger is involved with many specialist surgical societies and Government bodies. He is past President of the International Society of Arthroplasty Registries, a fellow of the International Hip Society and the Australian Arthroplasty Society, as well as other International and National organisations. He was also a member of the Commonwealth Department of Healths Clinical Hip Advisory Group.
Professor de Steiger has published over 140 peer reviewed articles in high ranking journals, several book chapters, and given over 270 International and National Plenary and peer reviewed presentations.
