Mr Dirk van Bavel

Specialist in Hip and Knee Surgery
Mr Dirk van Bavel is a specialist consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with a special interest in Robotic Joint replacement.

He completed his medical degree through the University of Melbourne in 1995, winning the Neil Bromberger prize in Orthopaedics. His Orthopaedic training was in Victoria, winning the Registrar in Training Prize in 2003.

After completing his training, he undertook further fellowship training in Hip and Knee surgery in Belgium, England and Canada. These fellowships included further training in hip and knee replacement and revision surgery, the use of allografts in surgery, sports knee injuries and patellofemoral problems.

Mr van Bavel performed the 1st Robotic Knee replacement in Victoria and has been a leader in Robotic Joint replacement since.

He is a national trainer for robotic Joint replacement, he is an invited speaker on robotic surgery at many workshops, and has published research on both Robotic hip and knee replacements. He is a keen researcher having previously completed a masters in Clinical research and is currently undertaking a PhD looking at aspects of Robotic Hip replacements.

Mr van Bavel is also a keen clinical educator and runs the national training program on the Exeter hip replacement (the most Commonly used hip in Australia) and is involved on 2 clinical fellowships training both local and international surgeons.

He is a member of the AMA, Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, Fellow of the Australian Orthopaedic Association.
He is a committee member of the Victorian AOA, On the Victorian Council of the AMA and a deputy director of the Musculoskeletal department at the Epworth Hospital and Head of Audit.
