Dr Christopher Spelman

Dr Christopher Spelman is an experienced orthopaedic surgeon specialising in the management of hip and knee conditions across all ages. He has recently relocated to Melbourne from Sydney where he worked in both public and private practice.
He is currently consulting at Epworth Hospital Richmond and works publicly at Monash Health. Dr Spelman works collaboratively with his patients, their GPs, sports medicine physicians, rehab specialists and physiotherapists to achieve the best possible outcomes.

HIP
Dr Spelman specialises in the management of hip pathology in all ages. He subspecialty interests hip replacement surgery (including direct anterior approach and robotics), revision hip replacement, and hip resurfacing, with a strong focus on both operative and non-operative treatment pathways. He also specialises in hip preservation techniques including periacetabular osteotomy and femoral osteotomy surgery for young adults.
KNEE
Dr Spelman manages a wide spectrum of knee conditions, including degenerative, traumatic, and sports-related injuries. He has a specific focus in non-surgical management of both acute and chronic knee disorders where appropriate. Dr Spelmans surgical expertise includes primary, partial, and revision knee replacement, utilising advanced navigated and robotic-assisted techniques, as well as sports knee surgery for meniscal injuries and ACL ruptures.
TRAUMA
Extensive experience in the surgical management of upper and lower limb trauma for patients of all ages, including fractures, ligament injuries, and tendon injuries, with an emphasis on restoring function and mobility.
PAEDIATRIC CARE
(Infants, Children, Adolescents)
Specialised paediatric orthopaedic care focusing on hip dysplasia and other developmental hip conditions including pelvic osteotomy in infants and children and periacetabular osteotomy and femoral osteotomy for hip dysplasia, Perthes disease, slipped femoral epiphysis (SCFE) and hip impingement. He also treats paediatric knee injuries and limb alignment issues.
