Forensic Psychiatry

Forensic psychiatry is a subspecialty of Psychiatry pertaining to the mental health of people within the

criminal justice system.

Forensic psychiatrists work with the justice system to examine the connection between mental health and criminal actions. Within the court system a forensic psychiatrist may examine an individual’s competency to stand trial and their mental state at the time of the crime. Defences may be based on the psychiatrist’s opinion of the defendant’s mental state e.g. the insanity defence and provided sentencing recommendations.
