Dr John Rooney is an Orthopaedic Surgeon at St Vincents Private Hospital, Sydney, specialising in reconstruction of the adult lower limb.
Dr Rooney graduated with Honours from the University of Sydney with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, in 1994. He is a Fellow of both the Royal Australian College of Surgeons (F.R.A.C.S) and the Australian Orthopaedic Association (F.A.Orth.A).
After completing his orthopaedic training in Australia, Dr Rooney travelled to North America, where he was selected for two clinical fellowships through the prestigious University of Toronto at St Michaels Hospital, Toronto, Canada. His first fellowship involved; primary and revision hip and knee replacement surgery, arthroscopy and ligament reconstruction of the knee. His second fellowship was in advanced foot and ankle surgery, ankle arthroscopy, ankle ligament reconstruction, cartilage transplantation and total ankle replacement surgery.
Dr Rooney is an Australian pioneer in Minimally Invasive Computer Navigated, Anterior Total Hip Replacement surgery, also known as Direct Anterior Approach Hip Replacement Surgery (DAA). He has trained extensively in Germany, France and Belgium, Dr Rooney is one of the few surgeons in Australia to offer this new approach in total hip replacement surgery.
Dr Rooney has a keen interest in education and training and has an active supervisory and instructive role with both undergraduate and postgraduate medical students through the University of New South Wales and Notre Dame University. He is also involved in specialist orthopeadic surgical training and is actively involved in the recruitment and training of national and international orthopaedic surgical fellows.
