Pain Management Specialists
Pain management is the process of providing medical care that reduces pain. Mild to moderate pain can usually be treated with common analgesic (pain-killing) medications, such as aspirin or paracetamol. For chronic (long-term) or severe pain, opiates such as morphine are often used, sometimes together with analgesics. Steroids or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may be used when the pain is related to inflammation. Antidepressants can improve the effect of some pain medications, and affect the brain’s perception of pain. Massage, acupuncture and acupressure are also useful for pain control in some patients.
