Bariatrics / Obesity Surgery
Bariatrics is a medical specialty that offers treatment for those who are overweight. This may include a programme of diet and nutrition, exercise, behaviour modification, lifestyle changes and appropriate medications. Obesity surgery (or weight loss surgery) includes a variety of procedures performed on people who are obese. Weight loss is achieved by surgically reducing the size of the stomach (with a gastric band) or through removal of a portion of the stomach (sleeve gastrectomy) or by resecting/reducing and re-routing the small intestine to a small stomach pouch (gastric bypass surgery).
